About Tavistock Town FC
Tavistock Jets was formed in 1995 by Jim Lothian. Jim was dismayed by the
lack of organized youth soccer in our area compared to the number of children
wanting to play. He and other local parents formed 2 teams and had 36 boys
registered. Jim began coaching sessions for others who had heard but were not in
a squad and the Club has just expanded very rapidly from there. The following
season saw 4 league teams entered. In the 200/06 season, the Club fields 9
teams in our local FA regulated leagues and coaches in total 240
children/youths.
From the 2003 season we changed our name to Tavistock Town FC for the league
teams and will be using the Jets name for the 5 to 7 years olds.
Coaching achievements
Most managers/coaches have attended FA courses or are
experienced footballers themselves. Two coaches are FA qualified.
Last season Paul Cornish visited Anfield to collect his 'NCFE foundation studies
in exercise diploma' from Halton College, which was run in association with
Liverpool FC.
We have been awarded the prestigious 'FA Charter Mark' which certifies that our
Club operates within the guidelines laid down for youth football clubs by
the FA. All our Managers attend a FA youth football training course over a
number of days and have been certified as competent trainers by the FA. All
managers and coaches have also been police checked to ensure they have no record
of suspect involvement with children.
Mini-Soccer
The FA four years ago, formally rolled out mini- soccer 7 a side games for
Under 9 and 10 age groups, carefully banded so that a child can only play in his
school year age group. We field 2 sides in Under 9's and 1 in Under 10's for
2004/05; while we call them leagues the FA will not allow league tables or
results to be published, fearing tough competition forced on children at this
age will hamper their full development and enjoyment of the game. Training
sessions are offered for Under 8's, Under 7's and Under 6's as well.
Youth Soccer
This operates under normal FA rules and we field U11, U12, U13, U14, U15 and
U16.
Youngsters love their football and that makes it worthwhile. It is a
great feeling to be playing in a league every week and it gives them something
positive and healthy to focus on.
